Our Story
We have a unique and rich history that is almost a century old. Smith's Sewer Service Inc. was started in a garage on a farm north of DesMoines, Iowa. The founder was George Smith, who had an idea for a continuous rodder. This was a machine mounted on the back of a pickup truck, which was used to clean city sewers from manhole to manhole. He built his idea, and traveled around the state of Iowa. This was during the Great Depression and World War II. During this time, money was in short supply and financially, he could not survive. So, he decided to scale down his idea to clean sewers and drains.
During this time, George Smith held several patents for his ideas: One of these patents included the inter reel cage to keep cable inside a reel without binding up inside the reel, which is still in existence today. To help support the growth of the company, he joined up with a good friend, Samuel Blanc. However, soon after, tragedy struck in the form of lawsuits from his good friend. As a result of litigation, Samuel Blanc broke apart from Smith's Sewer Service and Roto-Rooter was founded. George Smith continued to clean sewer and drains until he retired and turned the company over to his son, Clovis Smith.
Clovis Smith ran the company up until his son, Donald Smith, graduated from college. Who then began to work for the company. Later, in 1969, Donald Smith aquired ownership of the company. Soon after, the first employee was hired. Business steadily grew throughout the years and our shop was finally built in 1984. Donald's son, Brent Smith, began working full time in 2000 and inherited ownership in 2025. As of today, Smith's Sewer Service Inc. is a 4th generation family owned business employing over 30 people and we continue to grow and succeed and grow into the future.
